Flexibility in focus: Transforming healthcare for uncertain times

FLASH took part in the EUHPP Live Webinar on health system resilience, co-organised with the European Hospital and Healthcare Federation (HOPE) and hosted on the EU Health Policy Platform.
The webinar brought together Calogero Guccio and Stefania Fontana (University of Catania), Pieter Bakx (Erasmus University Rotterdam), and Pedro Pita Barros (Universidade Nova de Lisboa), with the support of the FLASH coordinator, Paolo Pertile (University of Verona).

The presentations covered the key drivers of hospital resilience emerging from both literature and field surveys, a quantitative analysis of how hospitalisation rates in four EU countries dropped during COVID-19 and had not fully recovered by 2023, and a composite index that measures resilience by combining the depth of the initial shock with the completeness of subsequent recovery.

Pedro Pita Barros closed with reflections on how to build on these results and connect them to an ex-ante understanding of resilience.
